3) If you have a FULL charge on your phone, use unnecessary applications like the camera, games, GPS, etc. At least wait until your battery is down to 50%.

5) Your phone as 3G speeds, but if not planning on using multimedia messaging (sending pics and videos and audio) or using the internet, getting your emails, or using the GPS, figure out how to switch your phone to GSM mode, also known as "2G" mode. This mode still processes regular text messages and phone calls just as fine as 3G, but it will be difficult if you try to use data plan features like the internet if you use 2G.
6) Instead of waiting for the phone to die before charging it, charge it when the battery meter shows one bar because often times, it is inaccurate.
7) Try to keep the phone away from hot temperatures.
9) Keep an eye on the battery meter when charging and OVERcharge it because actually really bad for the battery, which you think, but true.
10) clean the battery contacts every few months because they built up dust and dubris. Those are the little gold, sometimes silver bars on the battery. Get a Q tip and use rubbing alcohol to clean them off.
11) If your phone has "save battery" mode, USE IT!
12) Turn your brightness down to 50%. take some getting used to, but the LCD display on the phone uses the most energy and a power hog.
13) Turn the backlight settings down to 3-5 seconds.

The main difference between a locked and an unlocked phone is the price. The phones get locked by the operators/carriers in order to ensure that you stay in they network for the duration of a subscription contract which includes a subsidized plan for the phone. They estimate that although they give you the phone at a lower price they will recover this subsidy (and more) by you using the phone in their network for that duration.
An unlocked phone will be paid for at the market price (no subsidy) but you are free to switch to another network at any time, you are not bound to any specific network.
Another thing to consider is that the locked phone may also be customized by the operator and it might have its brand all over the place. Some operators may even mess up with the software on the phones removing some of the features they like, e.g. VoIP
Buying unlocked phones with the original software as released by manufacturer is usually the best choice but of course the price is something to consider.
